Case Study:

Seybold Seminars

Client: A Conference and Exposition Business needing superior rapid web and print publishing capabilities.

Problem: Rapidly changing data takes too much preparation time for publishing.

Solution: Automate the book page layout process; publish live to the internet.

Key3Media Events, in Foster City, CA twice annually produces Seybold Seminars in Boston and San Francisco, the largest and most important trade exposition for the international publishing industry. Between 1994 and 2001, Micro Computer Consulting has continuously provided FileMaker Pro database development and support services to the staff who schedule speakers, moderators and tutorial instructors.

In the years 2000Ð20001, we helped Seybold Seminars radically improved the speed of publishing the details of hundreds of sessions, workshops and tutorials to the web and to print, starting with a FileMaker Pro database system for managing the speakers and their sessions. FileMaker support is now considered a mission-critical function and is handled by internal Information Technology staff at Key3Media.

The system developed by us in collaboration with other publishing consultants allows for updates to the session descriptions, speaker biographies, photos, and the like to be posted to the web instantaneously as they are added to the database.

The 200Ðpage Program Guides, which used to require a full month for page layout and printing, now goes from database to page layout to PDF to metal printing plates to bound books in just four days before the shows, allowing for information that is much more complete and accurate.
